While ofswa.on.ca describes it as a brief meeting held on quarterly basis with workers and their supervisors to discuss problems and concerns about condition and safety. Principally, it deals with definite topic, subject and qoute which are condition and safety linked in the workplace.

The objectives of a safety talk are to remind workers about potential hazards in their workplaces and help workers to identify and control these hazards.

Safety

They are best delivered by population who are responsible for workers' safety and health. They may be supervisors, condition and safety officers, members of safety committee or anyone with condition and safety duties. Even in some companies every worker is scheduled to give safety talk, in order to voice safety awareness among them.

So what kind of message should we deliver while safety talk? Are there any accepted messages? Basically there are no accepted messages. As long as we select a definite topic, subject or qoute which impart to condition and safety in the workplace, it will be enough. But the important point is safety talk message has to be well prepared, because it should be terminated in about 5 minutes..

Now it is the time to set up its schedule. We can achieve it once a week, three times a week or once a day. It merely depends on company's Ohs policy, job risks, workplace conditions and worker's skills.

Choose most accepted location where we will do it. Wherever possible, select the real workplace, or at least as close as potential to the real workplace. For instance, if we would like to achieve safety talk about confined space work hazards, do it at a tank, at an opened reactor column or near a vessel.

If potential use real tools, equipments, materials (for example chemicals), procedures and work conditions to demonstrate key points of the safety talk we are talking about, and to make it is easy to be understood.

Don't forget to make a record. Report the date, location, leader, attendants and the topic. Make sure that all attendants have signed on the attendant list. Also make a copy of the safety talk material and keep it together with the records for time to come reference.

Finally, I would like to stress that although safety talks only take 5 minutes to finish, but it helps employers and workers to remind importance of condition and safety, identify and control hazards, and keeps workers awareness alive. In many of the voluntary programs, Osha outlines five elements that will help you to create a flourishing management system. From my standpoint, although management and laborer participation is complementary and forms the core of an efficient safety and condition program, I want to make sure that there is a clear and definite dissimilarity between management of the carrying out and laborer participation. It will be easier to implement a management law if you understand what Osha is considering a model law and then enlarge on the model to fit the organization. The following are the core elements of an efficient management system:

Management leadership
Employee participation
Hazard identification and assessment
Hazard arresting and control
Information and training
Evaluation of program effectiveness

An efficient management law addresses work-related hazards, together with those potential hazards that could consequent from a turn in workplace conditions or practices. In addition, it addresses hazards that are not regulatory driven by nature. The best advice is to not wait for an inspection or a workplace injury to occur before workplace hazards are addressed. This was about as many people we could handle in the SH; any more and there be more stress for me as people don't get a chance to shoot enough and just stand around waiting for their turn (and safely managing it all). This facility was currently using safety video and safety protocol put out by the safety manager. The qoute is that the data wasn't being retained well enough. Some employees had the attitude that safety just was a boring video you watched once a year. In practice, many of them prided themselves on being tough and taking risks.

After a close inspection, tears, and fines by Osha, the company got serious about safety. They decided that for safety to be productive it must be remembered and often rehearsed.

For example, we liked the slogan, we may be tough, but we still need to tie off. Each day before work, supervision would get us together to pump us up for the day. Keep the robbery short; the longer it takes the more nervous the robber becomes. Give them what they want.

Stay calm and cope the entire situation as if you were development a sale to a customer.

Let the robber know you intend to cooperate with them; just give them the cash and merchandise they ask for and do exactly as they say. If you are not sure what the robber wants, ask.

The building safety certification scheme was introduced in 1995 to help improve safety standards on building sites. If this happened, it can cause an airplane to lose speed, & stall. To show a perfect example of ice build up on the wing, just stick your hand out of a spicy car window. Once your hand is horizontal to the ground, you can feel the flat airflow over your hand. However, if you tilt your hand at a angle then your will feel the disruption of the flat airflow. This is the same work on of icing on a wing.

However, turboprop airplanes are just as safe as jets. Turboprop airplane pilots wish greater insight of their aircraft's limitations, awareness, & industry safety practices. I had many fun safe years flying a turboprop before I moved on to jets. Like any other airplane, turboprops can be flown just as safely as jets. However, the best safety device in any airplane is still a well trained pilot with the knowledge to operate their airplane safely.

Since the late 1980's environmental, health and safety professionals have used a variety of software tools in hope of performing their programs' performance. In this article, the author discusses "The Evolution of Environmental, Health and Safety Compliance and Operational Risk Management Software".

So what exactly is EHS Compliance and Operational Risk Management Software? Well, that can mean many things to many different people and companies. For some companies that are somewhat in the reactive mode - it may mean just tracking occupational injuries, accidents, and claims. For others, for those companies that are slightly more proactive - it may mean audit finding tracking, corrective action tracking, and leading indicator tracking. And for the more advance companies it can mean tracking sustainability efforts, and greenhouse gas reduction efforts. It also can mean authoring and managing material safety data sheets, air emissions reporting, hazardous wastes management generation tracking, industrial hygiene data management, and many other environmental, health and safety program elements. Part of the challenge today, is that there are many systems that are trying to do EVERYTHING - thus making it difficult for companies to get their arms around such a system.

So, let's step back for a moment and discuss the history of environmental, health and safety compliance software, and operational risk management software. Back in the mid-1980's, the majority of EH&S tasks were done by paper, and completion of paper-based forms. EHS professionals were largely the people with the thick binders on their shelves containing all the company EHS rules and programs. At that time, at least at the entry level, personal computers in the workplace were rare. Then as we approached the 1990's a few computers starting appearing around the office, but were pretty much exclusively limited to senior level personnel. Personally, I still recall, looking out my office door, and seeing our library of federal and local regulations that covered the entire wall in one of our common areas. Then in the late 1980's, our first safety management software system appear. It was a DOS based system used for reporting occupational injuries, accidents, and other claims. It was basically, a workers' compensation and liability claims management system. So, it was really an operational risk management software tool. Still at that point, data entry into the system was primarily done by the administrative assistants, and the EH&S management would receive a printed report once per month. As more and more people in the office begin to have dedicated computers, everyone started to get creative in using them to manage various issues, including EHS. I believe the first EHS software tool that I every developed was a Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet used to track employee training.

Then in 1990, the next environmental, health and safety management software tool that I recall using was a system called CMS, which stood for Compliance Management System, and as the name refers to, it was primarily a PC-based system to manage EHS compliance tasks and requirements. It was ugly, but it actually worked quite well. The one challenge however, was in those days, implementation was difficult. A team of people would come out for a week or more, review every permit, every requirement and input them by hand into the environmental, health and safety software system.

Then around 1993, I recall my first experience with the world wide web - I clearly remember that I was in the office of the IT manager who's office was next to mine, and using Mosaic we pulled up the Center for Disease Controls' website. I remember thinking to myself - this is cool - this is really cool. At that time, little did we know, what were where about to experience over the next decade.

After that event, I remember that information technology the environmental, health and safety field just exploded, and in March of 1993, I attended the Global Environmental Management Initiative meeting in Pentagon City, near the Washington, D.C. area. During that meeting, there was a presentation about integrating right-to-know information at Dupont. It was basically centered around managing material safety data sheets. During that same time frame, I recall seeing a presentation by Bill Sugar on Anheuser-Busch's Environmental Management System, which was originally written in Lotus Notes. It had it's shortcomings, but with the leadership of Bill Sugar and his team of environmental, health and safety professionals they took EHS management to a whole new level. We then began to see environmental, health and safety software move from compliance-focused, and regulatory reporting focused to more of a total quality management approach. With the emergence of ISO14001 and OHSAS 18001 managing data began more important. In addition, with increase demand for corporate transparency, the need for rapid access to environmental, health and safety data became even more important.

So, that's some of the early history of environmental, health and safety software. And were do we stand today? Well, that vast majority of environmental, health and safety management systems are web-based. Everyone has an email, everyone has access to a computer, and almost every environmental, health and safety professional has a mobile phone. Today's smartphones have more computing power than those computers back in the late 1980s. Most major corporations collect and report all kinds of environmental, health and safety data. The majority of this data is readily available to the public.

So what challenges do we face today? First off, reducing complexity. Environmental, health and safety software providers have to realize that not every company is going to have a full-time administrator to run these complicated systems. More features, doesn't necessarily mean better. Forget "kitchen sinkness" or "feature creep" which is where software developers think they have to add every single possible feature to the system. In most cases it only increases the complexity of the program without adding additional benefit. If you think about it, the one reason text messaging and Twitter is so popular is that if you can't say it in 140 characters then you're saying too much. Second, there's too many companies offering EHS software solutions out there, there has to be, and will be some industry consolidation.

So, what's in store for the future of environmental, health and safety software? Well, EHS mobile apps will become more important. The use of RFID tags in combination with your mobile phone will become prevalent. While it is difficult to predict what new technologies will develop over the next several years, I do promise you that it will be an exciting time for all EH&S professionals.

Prepare relevant safety training for each employee based on survey results within your company. Classify each employee according to their job descriptions and tasks. As an example, plant operator will receive different safety topics with laboratory analysts. But some topics may be same.
All employees must be trained, including managers, supervisors, operators and temporary workers.
Your company should appoint safety officers and a safety committee. They are responsible for providing the training to new employees and propose additional training topics if they think it is required.
The topics and period must comply with government regulation and or standards.
Provide several forms of training materials, such as in Power Point Presentation, safety video, workbook or even safety handbook. These training materials could help you save training cost than hiring safety consultants.
It is very good to include equipment manufacturer's safety guide into your EHS training topics.
Ensure your training materials are easy to be understood. Make them concise. Use language that all employees will understand. Translate the materials into that language when you have to do it.
Be creative. Make the the training sessions interesting. Steal ideas from other companies or organizations if you are hard to find by yourself.
Don't forget to make training documentation and record. You will need them later as a proof of training compliance and to make the training program manageable.

The secret of making this communication worthwhile is to look at the whole situation through the eyes of an hourly paid worker. And remember, these are the people who make the profit for your business. The question which every hourly paid worker will ask is, What's In It For Me? Unless this question is answered in terms which they can understand, your safety program is doomed.

The hourly paid worker is interested in their immediate work area, their immediate work relationships and themselves. The terms in which leaders discuss the need for change has to reflect the values of the people who are listening. If their values are ignored, at worst, any changes will be resisted by every means at their disposal. At best, you will have created passive resistance.

If leaders tell their people to change, they can expect resistance, they cannot expect co-operation. It is human nature. To change the way a person behaves, it is necessary to work with that person and coach them through changes to the processes that they use in their work. During this personal development positive reinforcement should be used at every possible opportunity.

Introducing changes to the workplace can be difficult if the people introducing the changes do not have a clear understanding of human behavior.

The construction safety certification scheme was introduced in 1995 to help improve safety standards on building sites. How do I get a CSCS Card?

I can tell you how to get a CSCS Card first of all you can download the CSCS application form from the administrators of the scheme Construction Skills but before you do that there are a couple of things that you need to check.

First what type of CSCS card do you need? There are 3 application forms and you need to make sure that you download the correct form.

The choices are Craft & Operative Application Form (This form can also be used for those wishing to apply for a Regular Visitor, Construction Site Operative or Construction Related Occupation (CRO) card).

Professionally Qualified Person Application Form and Technical, Supervisor or Manager Application Form.

Second have you had the appropriate health and safety training to apply for the card? You must have passed a Construction Skills Health and Safety test in the last 2 years for you to able to apply for the CSCS Card.

So what is the CSCS test?

The early stages of launching a 501(c)(3) nonprofit can be overwhelming for the first-time nonprofit founder. Once you have figured out your cause, your programs, and have some plan for sustainability, the real work begins. The IRS application for exemption (Form 1023) is long and tedious, and the explanations for what it all means are not always clear. The first issue that can trip up those filling out the application is the distinction between a private foundation and public charity.

The IRS categorizes 501(c)(3) organizations as either private foundations or public charities. By far, the preferred status for most nonprofits is public charity status. Private foundation status is the default, unless your organization fits into the exceptions that provide public charity status. The advantages of public charity status are many and varied, and it is essential to understand the distinction between the classifications and how to fit into public charity (when there is a choice).

Private foundations are subject to far more regulation than public charities and are restricted from acts of self-dealing, maintaining excess business holdings, jeopardizing investments, and making certain expenditures. They also must meet minimum distribution requirements. The reporting requirements are burdensome, as well, with a more complex information return that must be filed annually.

Public charities are exempt from taxation on net investment income and certain federal excise taxes, where foundations must pay. Public charities also are in a better fundraising position due to several factors. First, higher dollar limits apply to contributions made by individuals and corporations to public charities, meaning the philanthropic folks interested in your cause benefit more from giving high dollar donations if you are a public charity. Public charities are also the only classification of 501(c)(3) organizations that may also establish and maintain pooled income funds. And, the expenditure rules that foundations are under make it far more likely that public charities can and will receive grant funding from private foundations.

There are four basic types of 501(c)(3) organizations that qualify as public charities. They are:

1. Organizations that engage in inherently public activities: Typically, churches, schools, hospitals, and governmental units meet this criterion.

2. Publicly supported organizations: Organizations that receive a substantial amount of their financial support from the public or government, or through purpose-related activities. This is the most common exception for 501(c)(3) public charities, and the primary test is the 1/3 support test. That is, at least one-third of the organization's total support must qualify as public support.

3. Supporting organizations: Essentially created to allow foundation-like organizations to qualify as charities as long as they are closely tied to an actual publicly-supported nonprofit, these organizations suffered from abuse at the hand of controlling interests. Recent changes in the law have tightened the oversight and limitations on these opportunities.

4. Organizations that test for public safety: This provision was added for organizations that test consumer products to determine their acceptability of use by the general public.

In most cases, the best route for public charity status is under the publicly supported organizations exception. Whatever your nonprofit idea, planning for a broad base of public support will both allow the highly preferable public charity status and will improve the organization's chances to survive and thrive.

The birthday of OSHA was December 29, 1970. Then-President Richard Nixon signed the Williams-Steiger Occupational Safety and Health Act into law. The purpose of the act was to give the national government the authority to set, monitor, and enforce proper safety techniques around most workplaces. The Secretary of Labor at the time, James Hodgson, set up the Occupational Safety and Health Agency under the Department of Labor on April 28, 1971.

At first, many people complained about the act. The agency required companies to retrofit machinery with protective guards, as well as provide training and documentation that was expensive and time-consuming. Also, the Department of Labor was not very strict about consistently enforcing the act.
